Castle ruins
Print Friendly

Strategically located, scenic and picturesque, the ruins of what was once the village’s medieval castle, or the “Cast’ddazz” the Castellaccio of Aidone sits above the village and the surrounding countryside. Possibly Arab-Norman or only Norman, it is still unclear. Today is it not possible to comprehend its shape, it has been reduced to only a few surviving walls. Yet the site is even more scenic than any lookout point so far observed. Here you can grasp the landscapes’ embrace and understand the placement choices made thousand years ago. We know that (Michele Amari tells us) it was besieged by the Anjou, in a theater of war that saw dramatic tactics and the use of every means to lift the siege. It was welcoming place for kings and queens until destroyed in the earthquake of 1693.
