Festa Madonna delle Grazie

The Festival of the “Beautiful Mother of Grace” occurs on September 8th of each year, but the celebration actually begins on August 29th. This is the day when the icon of Our Lady of Grace is carried from its church in procession to the church of St. Augustine.
The history of Centuripe since its inception has been closely linked to the image of Our Lady of Grace. The small painting by an unknown artist depicts the Madonna breast-feeding her child. St. Augustine is painted to the left of the Blessed Virgin, while on the right we find Santa Monica. At the end of the 500s this image was brought up the mountain by Brother Andrew del Guasto where Centuripe stands today, but at that time was uninhabited.
On August 29th, in an atmosphere of prayer, the canvas is taken from its church and carried in a procession to the church of St. Augustine where it remains until September 8th venerated by the faithful in prayer with the rosary. The people of Centuripe show their devotion with a strong participation, they feel the image’s importance connects to their origins. The festival also represents a unique opportunity for those who want to discover not only the beauty of Centuripe but also his innermost soul.
