Church of San Giorgio
Chiesa di San Giorgio 3 - Fine Art Produzioni

Down the via Sturzo opens up San Giorgio square where the homonymous church stands. It was built by the Genoese that arrived in Caltagirone around the year 1000. They were determined to celebrate their victory against the Saracens by erecting a temple to their patron saint.
The church had Byzantine architecture, with a missing atrium since it was destroyed by the 1693 earthquake along with much of the building. From the original structure a few slit windows and the doorway are visible in the current building. The bell tower that completed one of the defensive towers erected in eastern part of the city survived the earthquake. The building was rebuilt and decorated with stucco and frescoes on the ceiling, starting from the areas that resisted the earthquake.
Inside the temple in a marble case a picture of inestimable value is preserved: the Mystery of the Trinity, a Flemish painting attributed to Roger van der Weyden.
