Besides being known for its ceramics, Caltagirone is also known as the City of the Nativity Scene for the famous creations of its master potters and figurines of shepherds for sale in numerous workshops. There are also many nativity scenes, in terracotta and other material, set up in the historic center. Among the most spectacular is undoubtedly the Monumental Nativity kept in the Convent of the Capuchin Fathers, located at the end of Via Cappuccini, which each year attracts tourists and visitors from all over the world. Housed in a 16th century crypt in the convent, it tells the history of salvation, from the Annunciation to the Resurrection of Christ, with representations in terracotta placed in individual niches that form a single, spectacular view of the whole. All works of art that make up the Nativity scene are made and donated by renowned local potters. While admiring the nativity scene, it’s not hard to also find unusual, but universal characters like Mahatma Gandhi
