The Augustali

Tempio degli Augustrali 5 - Fine Art Produzioni

A short walk from the Regional Archaeological Museum, also on Via Giulio Cesare, you can admire the Augustali building. The area must have been rich in public buildings of a civic nature, forums, etc., even in the Hellenic-Roman period (from the 2nd century BC) and certainly in the imperial era. What is visible today was a rectangular building that overlooked a colonnaded street, from a meter above; upstream is a retaining wall with a highly refined drainage system. The square was dominated by arcades upstream part and must have remained open to views of Etna. The complex of statues is dedicated to Pompeius Sosius Priscus who was consul in 149 AD. It included at least a dozen statues of imperial family members, confirming its function as a public building through its use of dynastic propaganda. Numerous inscriptions within the building are of significant interest in reconstructing city life in imperial times.
Among the inscriptions the one belonging to Augustale (a priest of the imperial cult) stands out.
