If a place is in the center, it must have everything around it. “Dea di Morgantina” Tourism District is easily accessible from any corner of Sicily and vise versa, by crossing freeway A19 Palermo-Catania. For example, to reach Catania, the coast and Etna, it’s about an hour between the freeway and secondary roads. While from almost any place in the District, it is possible to see the volcano and all its magnificent vastness, in contrast from summit, areas like Rifugio Sapienza or even higher, the incredible Sicilian hinterland will appear on days with good visibility. In places where you can start your excursion, it will feel as if you were flying at high altitude.
A little further away is the entire Syracuse area, with the Capital in all its white magnificence, between Greek antiquity and late Baroque in limestone and the Iblei, highlands of carob trees that slip into the sea.
The Nebrodi, however are closer. Through the curvy streets of Leonforte for example, it can be reached before Nicosia (SS 117), then Troina (SS 120) and arriving in Cesarò (province of Messina), it is one of the “gateways” to the natural park that has a thousand secrets to reveal, by horse between the north and south of the island.
Not far from Caltanissetta, with its recent mining heritage, it is not difficult to reach Agrigento, its temples and magical coastline, up to Scala dei Turchi and Sciacca. Palermo is just a little further away and can be reached in couple hours by car.
While in the area, or even within the boundaries of the District, Nicosia must not be ignored, with its Gallic-Italic dialect and the architectural wonders of its Cathedral and the Castello di Sperlinga; or Agira, with its legendary “cassatelle” and the ruins of the castle at the top of the village; or Calascibetta, perched in front of Enna with its cave dwellings and the ruins of the “castle on the summit” (in Arabic q’alat shibet).
