Villa Zagaria_Campo del Germoplasma dell'Ulivo_Foto di Rosa Termine, UnikoreVilla Zagaria, with its park of about 14 hectares, is part of the Lake Pergusa Natural Reserve and since 2000 has been owned by the Province of Enna. In a panoramic position on the lake, it is the historic home of the barons of Geracello, dating from the 18th century. Originally used as a hunting lodge, it now houses the offices of the Reserve and the Environmental Education Center with adjoining laboratory. Next to the villa is a precious field of germplasm where the Agriculture sector of the institution, along with the National Research Council in Perugia, has planted 400 species of olive trees.
The trail winds through the Villa park for about 900 meters and the lake can be reached in about 400 meters. 50 meters further along the SR 3 and the coming from the secondary entrance inside the racetrack, near Hotel Riviera, toward the former “skeet shooting” is a great spot for bird watching.
The route starts from the exemplary group of Ailanthus, located north of the historic residence, and then continues between Atlas Cedars, Robinie and Bossi. After a few meters, for a stretch of about 60 meters, it passes through a beautiful gallery of Virgil Oak that together with buckthorn, acanthus, honeysuckle, butcher’s broom, asparagus, blood geranium, dog rose and ferula; constitute the hypothetical natural native vegetation and make this area, from the botanical point of view, the most interesting of the entire route. Soon after, on the left, you can see a fine example of a now centuries old, Cypress windbreak. When you reach the main trail you can choose between two alternatives: Take the path on the right in about 50 meters that leads to a plateau with a beautiful pine forest. From which you can admire the lake and relax in the equipped area (with a series of interactive games with which you can make pleasant naturalistic-scientific discoveries) or continue to descend in the direction of the Lake itself.
The rich and varied vegetation of the Villa Zagaria the educational path make autumn the best time to visit. When the ground is covered in a rainbow of colors in which shades of red, yellow, orange and green, reflect in the azure waters of the lake.
