Porta Janniscuru

Porta Janniscuro - Info Point EnnaThere were seven entrances to the city: “Porta di Lombardia”, “Porta di Kamuth” (in which today there are the remains that are privately owned), “Porta Portosalvo”, “Porta Pisciotto”, “Porta Palermo”, “Porta di Papardura” and “Porta Janniscuru”. The latter is the only one still visible today. High about 5 meters and wide about 2, it was built in medieval times.
The gate was built to defend the city: the function of these gates, which stood at strategic points of Enna, was military and civil: once closed the weaknesses of the fortresses, the city became safe and impregnable. Today it looks like a massive and imposing Roman arch. Immediately after the arch, to the left, there is the Cave of Guardiola where centuries ago, were carved some cells in which there were placed votive statues, so it is assumed that the cave was a primitive place of worship. From some years this place so charming is the backdrop to the commemoration of the arrival of Frederick II of Svevia during Frederick’s demonstrations.
