Public Garden
Giardino Pubblico 2 - Fine Art Produzioni

One of the walks that must be taken if you visit Caltagirone is certainly the charming Public Garden, located behind the Museum of Ceramics, which can be accessed by two flights of stairs: from Via Roma (main entrance next to the Politeama Theater), or from Viale Principessa Maria José.
The works on the Villa Comunale, entrusted to the architect Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile, began in the mid-19th century on an undeveloped hill near the center of Caltagirone, following a project carried out in the style of English public gardens. The result was the creation of a beautiful garden, which harmoniously combines art and nature. Among the majestic trees, exotic plants and ceramics, you notice the Liberty style doorway by Saverio Fragapane, the Moorish style musical by Salvatore Montalto (950s) and the fountain from the early 600s by the Florentine Camillo Camilliani.
Despite changes and additions, the Villa continues to be the most vivid expression of community identity Caltagirone, a green island with exceptional beauty and vastness, and characteristic villus of oaks, sophore, lindens, pines and cypresses that intersect and delimit the escarpments. All this includes essences of viburnum, mastic trees, boxwood, privet, pittosporum, lantana, acacia, Judas trees, ash, elm and casuarina. Many species enriching the life of the park and nest undisturbed in its branches: in addition to sparrows, magpies and pigeons, we can find the tawny owl, blackbird, biking, goldfinch, blackcap, nightingale and the Great Tit.
