Villa Romana del Casale
La Villa Romana del Casale 10 - Fine Art Produzioni

About 5 km south of the city is the Villa Romana del Casale, whose discovery is the most important archaeological find of the last fifty years. Its immense value for documenting the history of art is mainly due to more than 40 polychrome mosaic floors, spread over an area greater than 3,500 sq. m. They represent a complex that is not found in any other archaeological center in the Roman world, due to the number of floors, size, and important representations and lofty artistic value.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, it is definitely one of the greatest monuments of Sicily.
The walkways, that surmount the floor mosaics, guide visitors through the villa, providing an extraordinary testament to that era’s customs and social life. The magnificent rooms that make up the villa are organized other one after another, including the famous hall of “Young Girls in Bikinis” who exercise intently. In the beautiful mosaic in the “Hall of Orpheus,” lyres are played to charm the gods but instead draw your attention to all of the animals of creation. The impressive “Corridor of the Great Hunt” is an area of approximately 350m that represents with impressive realism, a hunting scene where animals are captured in Africa and then slung onto ships for Rome and later exhibited in the circus. The enormous “triclinium” depicts the twelve tasks of Hercules. The central apse displays a gigantomachy with five giants trying to catch the arrows thrown by Hercules that have been poisoned with the blood of Hydra of Lerna.
It is difficult to summarize the many stories covering the rooms of the villa with thousands of colored tiles that merge Roman era myth and legend. The best solution is to come and visit this lovely place and get swept away by its wonders and timeless tales.
