Mastazzola
Mastazzola - Fine Art Produzioni

“Mastazzolo” or “Mustazzolo” is a baked cookie with a hard dense texture that can be filled with honey (mastazzola di meli), cooked wine (mastazzola di vinucuttu) or prickly pear (mastazzola di ficudinii). The consumption of these cookies has very ancient origins, as early as 270 BC, Theocritus named them in his Idylls and Cato the Elder describes the recipe in De Agri Cultura. The Latin “mustacea” were prepared especially for weddings and were offered to guests before they left. In Enna, the cookie with a glass of wine is offered to the “nudi” (the brothers of Our Lady of the Visitation, at the end of the procession on July 2nd). “U mastazzulu” ennese has a rectangular shape reminiscent of a focaccia and on the back of the cookie it clearly reads “VM” or “Viva Maria”.
