The Norman Palio
Palio dei Normanni 3 - Erminio Gattuso

Every year on August 12, 13 and 14 in Piazza Armerina, a beautiful medieval festival takes place in memory of the holy war waged against the Muslims of Count Ruggero I, which led to the city’s liberation. The Norman Palio is the most important reconstruction of the medieval history in southern Italy, with over 600 people it is part of FIGS (Italian Federation of Historical Games) and is registered in the Register of Intangible Heritage of the Sicilian Region. Therefore in the beautiful setting of the city’s historical center, ladies, knights, army and militia create an attractive “return to the past”. It consists of horse racing (at the stadium), beautiful parades in period costumes and re-enactments depicting the history of the city. It is a unique experience that all of Piazza Armerina experiences while passionately waiting for the “Quintana” where the four historic districts compete in an exciting tournament. This unique event allows you to dive in and experience sounds and images that have been lost over time. It is not easy to describe this festival in only a few words; it must be experienced to be understood. It can only be said that when the beats of the drums and the braying of the trumpets begins to spread through air of Piazza Armerina, something is awakened in the minds of the inhabitants of the neighborhoods.
