Piacentino Ennese DOP

Piacentinu ennese dop 3 - Consorzio tutela piacentinu ennesePiacentino, in dialect called “piacentinu ennisi”, is produced in nine municipalities in the province of Enna. This cheese is one of the major elements of the typical local cuisine. On February 15, 2011, it received the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) at the European level. It is a hard sheep cheese flavored with saffron and pepper grains that give the cheese a spicy note, while the sweetish flavor is due to the saffron aroma, which varies according to the length of aging and that gives it its characteristic yellow gold. Legend has it that Ruggero I, Count of Altavilla, by the eleventh century, while attended to his wife Adelasia’s depression invited local cheese makers add a pinch of saffron in their cheese preparation.
