Monte Altesina Nature Reserve

RNO Monte Altesina 11 - Fine Art Produzioni1,192 meters high, it was one of the key points of division in the valleys by the Arabs (Val Demone, Val di Mazzara and Noto Valley): then was named “Mount Ereo” or airplane (soaring into the sky?). “As tall as the Altesina” is a typical figure of speech in the area. Here the vegetation is lush among oaks, wild ancestral remnants of the woods. In addition to the ruins of “Cummintazzu”, on the top of the mountain are the remains of a prehistoric village. Recently the Natural Reserve “Monte Altesina” was established with about 20 km of road from Leonforte, reachable from the Provincial Road 39 to the north, to the south by the same, which then joins Provincial Road 80.
From the entrance gate of the Forest continue along the dirt road up to a large square where the barracks of the Company, provide services and a guardhouse. From the square a second narrower dirt road departs, up to the highest part of the Mountain and passes the ruins of the Convent of Santa Maria of Lartisina, at an altitude of 954 meters above sea level, in a clearing there we can appreciate an amazing landscape towards the holm oak woodland and towards a cliff. From the ruins, the road leads to the south and after a wide curve, upward to 1006 meters above sea level, it then leads down to a rocky outcrop that houses the remains of a tomb cut into the rock. Continuing on, it goes up towards the northwest through an area of shrubs and pastures. Here the landscape becomes even more majestic overlooking the southern Sicily and Enna. Follow the road into the pine forest with a steep slope you reach the top, at 1,192 meters. Here the view will open three hundred and sixty degrees over the island and will help identify major peaks of Madonie, Etna and Mount Guard.
There are beautiful dense holm oaks near the top, where you will find archaeological ruins. The way back will cover exactly the same route. It is not advisable to take this route on days with heavy fog.
