Morgantina Archeological site
Morgantina 1 - Fine Art Produzioni

A thousand years of urban history concluded two thousand years ago. This could summarize the story of Morgantina, the city that can better show the visitor also non-experts, better than many other archaeological sites, how urban space was organized in antiquity. It was even inhabited in prehistoric times, the pre-Hellenistic Morgantina is located on the hill called “the Citadel”, where you can not only see signs of huts dating to the Bronze and Iron Ages, but also buildings that tell of the arrival of the Greeks to the site. The most well known town instead, is Sella Orlando. The oldest city, that of the Citadel was plausibly destroyed by Ducezio during a siege causing movement to the more defensible site of Sella Orlando, where Morgantina came to have up to 10,000 inhabitants. Here the excitement for arrival – along the recently built road, equipped with rest areas with shady olive trees – and the insight of a stunning landscape, accompany visitors for all the entire time they decide to stay at Morgantina, the city that history keeps alive and understandable. Through illustrative material, panels and the availability of many maps and captions, the urban layout is clearly visible as they we enter: the Agora, around which life of the city is organized, displaying the remains of the Stoa, the covered colonnade where people exchanged goods and ideas; the Prytaneion, or perhaps the public house had hostel or tavern functions; Macellum, with clearly displayed functions; the spectacular Gradonata Trapezia – used for town meetings, as Ekklesiasterion, or for worship with the theater that almost overlooks the valley below, ends the public space. Above on the hill are the private houses, most notably the Casa del Saluto (with his mosaic “carpet” that reads “EYEXEI” as a kind of welcome to visitors and the house of Ganymede. Finally, you can see the production facilities, all of the furnaces and barns. Without forgetting the important places of worship, is the small temple dedicated to Demeter and the Central Shrine.
Visiting Morgantina is a journey through time. The silence of the hills with the carpet of the rural landscape below as a great frame from antiquity, one could almost see the men and women who inhabited these houses, streets, squares and the theater, and hear them at work. But maybe it’s just the imagination and the wind blowing through the trees and the crumbling walls.
