the return of the Goddess

Even the building is worth a visit; the Regional Archaeological Museum was in fact placed in the former Capuchin monastery and church of San Francesco, a recently restored 18th century complex to best tell the story of Morgantina from the Bronze Age to the Roman Republic.

Between 2009 and the spring of 2011 two acroliths from the Greek archaic era (plausibly representing the goddesses Demeter and Kore) have been reported in Italy, a service of sixteen silver pieces for ritual and table uses, and finally the Goddess of Morgantina; likely an acrolith of excellent craftsmanship (her clothes, her face) that must have had a public function, meant to be placed on a pedestal. Having left the American museums, today they can be found back “home” and are beautifully visible in Aidone.
