Pignolata is a typical Southern Italian dessert and in particular in Sicily. It is a dessert that takes its name from its peculiar pinecone shape. This specialty is prepared throughout Sicily and is reminiscent of Neapolitan struffoli. Pignolata is a dessert that is usually enjoyed at Carnival in Enna and in particular for San Giuseppe. The ingredients are simple, namely eggs, sugar and flour, which are formed into balls of dough that will first be fried and then covered in honey and colorful sprinkles.
