It is said that Leonforte has ancient origins, and that actually the ancient Sicilian city of Tabas, also called Tavaca, arose here. At 600m above sea level, among the Erei mountains, and 22km from Enna, today the town has a population of 15,000 inhabitants. First, with the Byzantines, then the Arabs the territory was the location of a castle called Tavi with an attached hamlet. In that period the area saw the birth of an efficient irrigation system and other water mills. After it was contested between small local rulers during the Norman period, the fiefdom finally passed to the Branciforte family in the 15th century. Nicolò Placido Branciforti officially founded the city in 1610 with “licentia populandi”, which he named in an act of homage to his family’s coat of arms: a rampant regent lion on the banner with paws and the motto «in fortitudine bracchii tui». Palazzo Branciforti dates back to that period, sealing the rank of princedom acquired in 1622. Monuments such as the Stable, the Granfonte fountain and the Capuchin church, are all works associated with the noble family, which was later replaced by the Li Destri in the mid-19th century.  Pottery, leather tanning, a textile mill and sulfur mine combine with agriculture in the economy of Leonforte and its lands. Agriculture is now seen in the famous September Peach PGI and in the Broad Bean Fava, together with wheat and olive groves, the elements that characterize the town’s activities and paint the surrounding landscapes. The landscapes here are anything but flat: the Mount Altesina Reserve, Mezzo Mountain, Mount Scala and Mount Boscorotondo, along with Lake Nicoletti, make the Leonforte territory another piece of the District to discover, and an emblem of noble power concentrated, expressed by the city’s urban architecture
