Grand Priory of Saint Andrew

Gran Priorato di sant'Andrea 3 - Fine Art Produzioni

On Via Torquato Tasso (the road leading to Park-Hotel Paradise) is the priory of St. Andrew, of which today remains only the sober but fascinating church. It is the oldest church in Piazza Armerina and one of the most interesting artworks from medieval Sicily, both in terms of architectural history and with regard to the history of painting. It was founded in the early decades of the 1100s most probably by Count Simone Aleramico, nephew of Conte Ruggero, and was entrusted to the Canons of St. Augustine. In 1148, the aforementioned Count Simone and his wife Thomasia donated it to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. The building has a rough appearance, revived on the facade by a pointed arch portal encased with columns set against the splays and south transept by a small portal with typical elements of the Arab-Norman period in the village, found in similar works.
