Housed in the Jesuit College, the municipal library entitled to Alceste brothers and Remigio Roccella, politicians and intellectuals who worked in the late nineteenth century, holds about 40,000 volumes including 122 incunabula (XV sec.), 783 sixteenth, tens manuscripts of different ages and books with copper engravings of great value.
Such a rich heritage has long been available only to academics who, under the control in view of the Director and the staff, were able to turn the pages of books as rare as valuable.
The permanent exhibition of ancient books opened in spring 2009 in the hall of Choir of the Jesuits, enriched by precious baroque stucco. In showcases specially designed and built are displayed on a rotating, some of the most precious volumes between those in possession of the library from the Book of Privileges which collects the privileges granted by the King of Sicily from 1300 to 1760, in one of the volumes of Philip Arena published in 1767 on the nature and culture of flowers, the volume of Prospero Intorcetta, the first Latin translation of the texts of Confucius of 1662, other volumes, mostly from the libraries of the monasteries confiscated after the unification of Italy, some of which present only in very few Italian libraries.
