Medieval walls and Porta Castellina

Mura medievali e porta Castellina 1 - Fine Art Produzioni

Looking at the ancient city from the north, we look at the landscape of popular neighborhood Castellina, dominated at the top by the Duomo and closed down by the remains of the medieval walls. The still visible traits of the Piazza Armerina’s Wall are fairly short and includes a round tower, two sections of walls that branch off from it (in one of which there was a gap) and a section of wall in the containment area between the Palazzo Vescovile and the Torre del Padre Santo. The tower in the boundary wall is circular with an outer circumference of 15.30 meters and a height of about 14 meters and it is made of ashlar stones shapeless. Inside and outside, both the walls and the tower have many changes due to housing needs. The rest of the walls was incorporated or in some homes, or demolished. The Porta Castellina (also called Porta Castellana) is the first gate and it was built perhaps after a war. However, we have certain informaton about the existence of five gates: the Porta Catalana in the south-west, the Porta San Giovanni in the east, the “Scattiola” in the north-east and Porta of “Altacura” in the southeast.
