Festival of San Giuseppe
Festa di San Giuseppe - Davis Longhitano 1

As in other village in Sicily, devotion to San Giuseppe is manifested in Centuripe with the Feast of March 19th, which in addition to a mix of faith and folklore also offers an interesting gastronomic view of the village, thanks to the arrangement of the traditional tables placed in several narrow streets. The Confraternity of the Patriarch “San Giuseppe” begins preparing in mid-February and culminates its work with the celebration on March 19th. The tables of San Giuseppe deserve special mention. Tradition says that whoever asks for San Giuseppe’s grace, promises to make a table with 19 (number of days of the festival) “verginelle”, young boys and girls who offer their fasting for the family that hosts them.  At midday after the prayer, the priest blesses the table and soon after, only the “Verginelle,” consume “Lunch”, the remaining pasta shared with neighbors. The festival of San Giuseppe is therefore a unique opportunity to taste some typical dishes in an atmosphere of celebration and sharing: pasta with chickpeas, rice with ricotta, boiled, pieces of fried ricotta, fried cod, fried cardoons, fried potato dumplings, fried artichokes, boiled broccoli (spicuna) of St. Joseph. All of it is sweetened with the “Sticks of San Giuseppe”,  “Sfinci Ammilati” and ricotta ravioli.
