San Filippo

Every May 1, Aidone becomes the destination of a pilgrimage from about 50 Sicilian villages; many pilgrims face the journey on foot. The reason for this massive effort is the widespread affection of inland Sicily to this saint. Tradition has it that the festival also overlaps the pagan one dedicated to the goddesses Demeter and Persephone. In the village nearest to ancient Morgantina, reference to the ancient gods goes so far as to suggest a resemblance between the statue of the saint (recently restored) and Hades or Zeus. The passion and devotion seen today are overwhelming and the procession on May 1 demonstrates its full force. The statue was recently restored and is now carried in procession with its bright and flamboyant colors.
