Chiesa del Gesù ed ex convento dei Gesuiti 4 - Fine Art Produzioni

In Via Discesa del Collegio you can admire the Church of Gesù or the College, built in the second half of the 16th century. Despite the damage suffered as a result of the disastrous earthquakes of 1693 and 1908, and damage from the Second World War, which was followed by necessary renovations, it has maintained its facade with a monumental doorway. In the lower order, the big doorway is flanked by two pairs of slender columns on high bases, it is surrounded by eight statues of saints in niches. In the upper order, on either side of the large window, are the statues of San Giuseppe, the Madonna with Child and at both ends, Saints Pietro and Paolo. The rich interior full of art, features altars with lavish spiral columns and paintings by renowned artists from Caltagirone. In the neighboring Via degli Studi stands the Jesuit College: particularly noteworthy are the two doorways through which you can access the two courtyards, which at one time were not divided. According to history among the College’s disciples was Giuseppe Balsamo, Count of Cagliostro.
