September Peach PGI

Pesca 1 - Fine Art Produzioni

Sweet fruit with its typical yellow color and exotic scents: the cultivation of the late peach in Leonforte, the exquisite Settembrina peach is a delightful garrison of Slow Food renowned for its organoleptic characteristics, PGI status and is also the pride of Leonforte. Slow Food calls it the “small folly” because of the practice by which in June, farmers enclose the still green peaches in paper bags by hand, one by one on the shaft. Leonforte peaches ripen in September, October, even November. Protected from pests and wind, they remain on the tree for a long time and are harvested only when perfectly ripe. In Leonforte many local varieties survive, in contrast to national trends suffering from gigantism of the fruit. These peach trees are the new hope for the village.
